This class is for middle school students who are interested in improving their acting and performance technique. This class will be broken into three units to allow for in-depth study of various acting topics. Students will first study improvisation and ensemble building, then will move on to an in-depth study of creating a character using techniques for voice and body. For the final unit, students will be asked to incorporate what they have learned throughout the year into a devised theatre piece. The program will conclude with a showcase where they perform their original ensemble-generated performance. Prerequisite: This class is for fifth graders who have already taken a Playhouse on Park acting class and have permission from the instructor, plus all sixth through eighth grade students.

Welcome to the basics of theatre! Children will be introduced to theatre through creative play. Exercises and games will focus on acting, storytelling, puppetry, music, and movement. A story will often be incorporated. In fact, most of the time the kiddos become the playwrights themselves! By the end of the class, students will be able to use their bodies and voices to start to create characters. While the emphasis of the class will focus on developing skills and not on a final performance, family and friends are invited to the last class to see students present a short script/ share day. Each session will have a theme. Themes will be announced during the first day of class! This class will cover: characters, emotions, tableau, props, setting, stage directions, pantomime, musicals, and themes. Possible Themes: Superhero’s, Under the Sea, Rockstars, Dr. Seuss, etc. Student Prerequisite: Students must be currently enrolled or have completed Kindergarten to register this class. Class Prerequisite: None! Note: It is strongly encouraged that you take this course for a full year before moving to the next class: PUTTIN ON A SHOW. Classes begin on Monday, January 28th. Learn the basics of improvisational theater and have fun doing it. Discover how to actively listen, create stories, and to avoid common thoughts and communication patterns. This class will focus on the fundamental principles of improvisation with emphasis on scene building skills and having fun. Starting with ensemble building activities, students will work to improve their performance technique as a group, in partners and individually. Classic Improvisation games will have these students having fun on stage and saying "Yes, And!" , while script work will allow them to make strong choices as characters within a story. Prerequisite: It is strongly encouraged that students take PUTTIN ON A SHOW for a full year to register for this class.

Children will continue to study theatre through creative play. Exercises and games will focus on acting, storytelling, puppetry, music, and movement. A story will often be included. By the end of the class, students should be using their bodies and voices to create characters. Each session will have a theme. Themes will be announced during the first day of class! A theatrical experience that focuses on storytelling through acting and creative play. Young actors will shine on stage and explore popular Dr. Seuss stories together as an ensemble. Come act out Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham and all your favorites! Students will create their own characters, play Rhyming Freeze Tag, and move and sing to songs like “Oh The Thinks You Can Think!” from SEUSSICAL. This wubbulous session focuses on building basic acting skills and also adds in movement and music, along with craft projects to encourage self expression! Students will perform scenes in a culminating open class. Whether you dream of performing, want to be a better public speaker, or you just want to impress your friends at the next cocktail party, Introduction to Improvisation is for you. Classes begin on Monday, January 28th. Learn the basics of improvisational theater and have fun doing it. Discover how to actively listen, create stories, and to avoid common thoughts and communication patterns. This class will focus on the fundamental principles of improvisation with emphasis on scene building skills and having fun. Classes are taught by Claire Zick; credentials found on Playhouse on Park website. Come act out Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham and all your favorites! Students will create their own characters, play Rhyming Freeze Tag, and move and sing to songs like “Oh The Thinks You Can Think!” from SEUSSICAL. This wubbulous session focuses on building basic acting skills and also adds in movement and music, along with craft projects to encourage self expression! Students will perform scenes in a culminating open class.
