The Arts Council acts as a key strategic partner and civic institution to utilize the power of the arts to improve cities and towns, celebrate the unique cultural diversity of the region, educate families, create an economic “ripple effect” and make Greater Hartford a vibrant, wonderful place to live, work and visit. By providing grants, programs and services the Arts Council is able to leverage the arts to strengthen communities, drive the economy, and improve the quality of life of 1.2 million residents across a 34-town region in central Connecticut.

The Community Impact Goals and Indicators focus the Arts Council’s investment strategy to create enhanced impact through the arts and establish five goals for organizations to support the Arts Council mission to create a vibrant and vital arts environment in our region.

  1. Promote intercultural understanding by supporting arts experiences that include, represent, and engage all populations regardless of their ethnic, cultural, social, economic, and ability backgrounds.

Indicators of success include efforts to:

  • Promote and create programming with engagement across ethnic, cultural, social, economic, and ability backgrounds.
  • Increase the active participation in the organization’s base audience with constituents that represent and reflect all communities.
  • Present artwork and artists that are inclusive of all members of the community (race, gender, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, immigration status, religion, etc.).
  • Present programming that uses art to tell the unique stories that are inclusive of all members of the community (race, gender, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, immigration status, religion, etc.).
  • Strengthen communities through intercultural artistic partnerships and collaborations.

  1. Utilize the arts to cultivate the creative talents of school-aged (pre-K through grade 12) youth in the region, especially those whose economic conditions present a barrier to access.

Indicators of success include efforts to:

  • Cultivate the next generation of arts patrons and/or artists by providing opportunities for youth to actively participate in the creation of, and appreciation for, art.
  • Foster collaborations with schools to promote and integrate the arts in education (such as STEM to STEAM strategies to encourage the integration of the arts into science, technology, engineering, and math.)
  • Utilize the arts as a means to cultivate creative thinking, enhance problem solving and improve academic performance.

  1. Enhance the vibrancy of communities that have been historically unserved or underserved by increasing members’ access to arts experiences and institutions.

Indicators of success include efforts to:

  • Reduce barriers to participation, economic, language, transportation barriers, etc.
  • Increase the variety and frequency of arts experiences to engage audiences in the local communities where they live (as opposed to drawing them to your institution’s physical location).
  • Increase access and inclusion for individuals from historically underserved communities.
  • Increase the variety and frequency of arts experiences embedded in or accessible to neighborhoods throughout the region.
  • Provide space to access art and creativity for historically underserved communities.
  • Promote forms of expression and cultural traditions that are often marginalized.

  1. Engage members of diverse communities to explore social issues of broad public concern together through the arts.

Indicators of success include efforts to:

  • Utilize art as a means to invite participation that generates dialogue, raises awareness, and/or cultivates intercultural understanding.
  • Build capacity, resilience, and economic viability for individual artists or arts organizations directly tackling social issues within the communities they are part of.
  • Create pathways that provide opportunities to explore intersections of race, gender, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, immigration status, religion, etc.

  1. Increase Greater Hartford’s ability to attract and retain talent by promoting the region’s rich arts offerings.

Indicators of success include efforts to:

  • Develop and share stories about the arts that distinguish the region as an exceptional place to live and work.
  • Collaborate with other organizations, agencies and governmental entities to leverage promotional opportunities for cultural activities across the region.
  • Attract those who live in other communities in the Capitol Region and engage them in the work of your organization.
  • Effectively utilize digital capabilities and social media to reach and engage new audiences.
  • Leverage assets and capacities with other arts organizations to expand impact, access, and sustainability.
