Canton’s Gallery on the Green hosts the annual Holiday Show and solo exhibitions by the group “Six Women Painting” and by Svetlana Shorey. The Holiday Show and exhibitions run from Friday, November 16th through Sunday, December 16th.
Gallery hours are Saturday 11-5 p.m. and Friday and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road. The Holiday Show is on the main floor which is handicapped accessible. The holiday show has gift items by guild artists and invited guests. These include fine arts, beautiful hand-turned wood, ceramics, jewelry, knitted wear and crafts – presents that are truly special. You can get gift wrapping and take the items at the time of purchase. There is a Festive Holiday Opening Reception on Saturday, November 17th and the final Holiday Party is on Saturday December 15th. Both events are from 6 to 9 pm and the public is warmly invited.
The group solo show in the Upstairs gallery, “Six Women Painting” features accomplished artists from Connecticut shoreline towns who show extensively around the state and beyond. They include Anne Merriam (Guilford), Rosemary Cotnoir (Essex), Kathleen DeMeo (Old Lyme), Donna Favreau (Westbrook), Elin Dolle (Deep River) and Claudia Van Nes (Chester). Mediums include painting, printing, photography and collage with presentations ranging from realistic to abstract. The group originally started about a dozen years ago when a group of artists started painting together at Claudia Van Nes’ house in Chester, The group had its first show at the Essex Art Association Gallery over Columbus Day weekend nine years ago and has continued the show every year since.
Svetlana Shorey’s exhibit “Create Your Own Sunshine” in the Spotlight gallery features her recent works of oil landscapes that are painted en-plein-air and still-life oil paintings of cut flowers. The bright and colorful atmosphere presented in each of these pieces is the binding element of this diverse show case. A graduate of the Vocational State University of Arts in Moscow, Russia, Shorey also completed a 4-year study in Easel Art and Graphics and certified in interior decorating and design in the U.S.
