We invite artists working in collage, printmaking, photography, drawing, painting and other mediums to apply. Deadline: February 1, 2019 at midnight Announced: March 30, 2019 The Artspace Flatfile houses a collection of works on paper by over 120 notable artists based in New Haven, the Northeast region, and across the United States. Artists in the Flatfile are selected through our annual juried Open Call, or invited into the Collection after participating in an exhibition at Artspace. The Collection was started in 2001 as a way of introducing the public to local artists, and continues to be a place where visitors can discover new local and national talent. Artists already in the Flatfile include recipients of the state art agency’s distinguished Artist Fellowship, the Aldrich Museum’s Radius Emerging Artist Award, a MacArthur Genius, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and many have works in private collections and museums around the United States.

FLANAGAN FLYNN This class sold out quickly for the Fall Session, so register now! ​If you have a desire to make writing your memoir or novel a priority, this collaborative workshop will provide you the necessary guidance, structure, and writer’s tools. In this 4-week workshop, you’ll learn how to draw upon your life experiences to write a memoir or craft fiction from your imagination. You’ll tackle your writing from all angles—as a reader, writer, and editor—with your eye toward publication. You’ll learn strategies to execute your ideas and build a working structure to save you time. To hone your craft, you’ll study nonfiction and fiction mentor texts. Under the guidance of a working editor of two award-winning magazines, you’ll learn how to shape your writing to captivate readers and sustain their interest. Writers of all levels are welcome. Workshop will target opportunities for growth to produce your highest quality writing. These four weeks will be transformational! Canton’s Gallery on the Green hosts the annual Holiday Show and solo exhibitions by the group “Six Women Painting” and by Svetlana Shorey.  The Holiday Show and exhibitions run from Friday, November 16th through Sunday, December 16th. Gallery hours are Saturday 11-5 p.m. and Friday and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.  The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road. The Holiday Show is on the main floor which is handicapped accessible. The holiday show has gift items by guild artists and invited guests.  These include fine arts, beautiful hand-turned wood, ceramics, jewelry, knitted wear and crafts - presents that are truly special. You can get gift wrapping and take the items at the time of purchase. There is a Festive Holiday Opening Reception on Saturday, November 17th and the final Holiday Party is on Saturday December 15th.  Both events are from 6 to 9 pm and the public is warmly invited.   The group solo show in the Upstairs gallery, “Six Women Painting” features accomplished artists from Connecticut shoreline towns who show extensively around the state and beyond. They include Anne Merriam (Guilford), Rosemary Cotnoir (Essex), Kathleen DeMeo (Old Lyme), Donna Favreau (Westbrook), Elin Dolle (Deep River) and Claudia Van Nes (Chester).  Mediums include painting, printing, photography and collage with presentations ranging from realistic to abstract.  The group originally started about a dozen years ago when a group of artists started painting together at Claudia Van Nes’ house in Chester, The group had its first show at the Essex Art Association Gallery over Columbus Day weekend nine years ago and has continued the show every year since.   Svetlana Shorey’s exhibit “Create Your Own Sunshine” in the Spotlight gallery features her recent works of oil landscapes that are painted en-plein-air and still-life oil paintings of cut flowers. Dianne Zweig, Making our Mark is a unique group exhibit that features abstract artwork by multi-media artists who revel in the art of Contemporary Mark-Making.  Using both conventional and improvised tools, this show celebrates the creativity, ingenuity and skill of "master scribblers."  Inspired by mid-century designers, the dynamic rhythms and movements found in music, dance and nature, this diverse collection of artwork is an exciting celebration of artists who have "made their mark" in fine art.
