Adult Master Class: The Art of Clowning

July 16, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Playhouse on Park, 244 Park Road
West Hartford, CT 06119 United States
+ Google Map
$30.00

Learn from Broadway stars this summer at Playhouse on Park! Broadway actor and teaching artist Eric Robertson is lined up to teach The Art of Clowning Adult Master Class on Monday, July 16 from 6:30-8:30pm. Friends of the theater may remember Robertson from the Playhouse's production of A Chorus Line in 2016! Eric Robertson the artist is the sum of very diverse parts. As a performer he's acted in film and TV, theatre, and musical theatre, on Broadway, all over the US and his native Canada. He's directed many productions around NYC, including the off-Broadway show "Gym Shorts: The Show," which he also wrote. He trained at the Barrow Group in NYC, where he was first introduced to the art of clowning. It was this course, and this philosophy, that transformed his acting more than anything else, and he is very excited to be able to share what he learned. Through games, discussions and exercises, this class will help actors explore a physical space, learn to feel more comfortable in that space, and discover the magic they can achieve when they unlock the power of that space. Participants will discover their "inner clown",  and really live in the moments before the response, where even the actor doesn't know what's going to happen, or even what they're going to say or do. Every scene, every line, every moment in any performance contains two elements: the stimulus, and the response. She jokes, he laughs.  He pushes, he falls. But there is something that is even more potent, more exciting, more vital, than either of those elements. And that is the space BETWEEN them. It is a space that is too often ignored, sometimes because it's a very scary place.  But that is EXACTLY WHERE THE CLOWN LIVES.  That space of unlimited potential. This class is one of three Summer Adult Master Classes offered by Playhouse on Park. Other classes include: Broadway Dance: Fosse, instructed by Stephanie Pope on July 9, and Contemporary Musical Theater Audition Technique, instructed by Michelle Pruiett (another former Chorus Line alum!) on July 23.

Darren Rivera (aka "The Rice and Bean Joker") has been entertaining audiences for more than a decade whether it's been colleges and universities or comedy clubs all over the United States. He has won WCCC Last Local Comic standing, runner-up in Funniest Comic in New England. His brand of humor is sarcastic, witty, and real to his life experiences. He has opened up for Jo Koy, Aisha Tyler, and Gilbert Godfrey just to name a few. He's originally from the Bronx, spent his adolescents in Bucks County, PA, and started his comedy career in Hartford, CT. Darren takes these life experiences and puts them on stage to entertain the masses.  Chris Clarke discovered his love for comedy while growing up in Bridgeport. Chris grew up entertaining his siblings, his friends, and (much to the dismay of his teachers) his school mates with his constant stream of jokes, impersonations, and dancing. In 2004, Chris started to pursue his dream of making people laugh. He kicked off his career doing skits in local comedy clubs. Since then, Chris has become a regular in the tough New York City comic scene. Additionally, Chris has travelled doing shows in various venues around the country, doing shows in L.A, and at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival. By Joe Landry An alien invasion throws humanity into chaos in the classic sci-fi novel "The War of the Worlds"--but all it took to cause real-life panic in the streets was Orson Welles's 1938 radio adaptation, which listeners took for news. Now, ten years later, the WBFR radio ensemble recreates the colorful events surrounding the infamous evening, including the full original broadcast. Complete with vintage commercials and live sound effects, this radio-play-within-a-radio-play is a thrilling homage to the form's golden age and timely reminder of what fear can do to a society. About the Playwright: Joe Landry's plays have been produced across the country and internationally, and include "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" (named "One of the Top Ten Most Produced Plays in America" by American Theatre magazine), "Vintage Hitchcock," "War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast," "Reefer Madness," "Fake News!," "Meet Me in St. Louis: A Live Radio Play," "Eve & Co.," "Beautiful," "Hollywood Babylon," "Relationship Status" and "Numb." Mr. Landry attended Playwright's Horizons/NYU, founded Second Guess Theatre Company in Connecticut and is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America. He has taught playwriting at Sacred Heart University and is currently developing new projects for the stage and screen. www.joelandry.com

by Aaron Posner Based on the book by Chaim Potok   This award-winning play by Aaron Posner, based on the best-selling novel by Chaim Potok (the same writers of Playhouse on Park’s sold-out hit, THE CHOSEN) tells the story of Asher Lev, a young Jewish painter torn between his Hassidic upbringing and his desperate need to fulfill his artistic promise. When his artistic genius threatens to destroy his relationship with his parents and community, young Asher realizes he must make a difficult choice between art and faith. Playwrights on Park: The Ladykilling Chattanooga

April 30, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Playhouse on Park, 244 Park Road
West Hartford, CT 06119 United States
+ Google Map
$10

About the Playwright: SCOTT STEPHEN KEGLER is a comedian, event entertainer, and published playwright. His works have been performed throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York City. Most recently his works FINAL ARRANGEMENTS and CHAMPAGNE AND LICORICE very well received. He is known for his absurd, high energy style and willingness to leave no comedic stone unturned. When he is not creating new laughs for the audience, he’s most likely juggling everything at home with his wife, his children, and furry menagerie.     About the play: The Ladykilling of Chattanooga, is a full length play about Julia Morrison James. She was a stage actress in a touring comedy from New York City, who alleged that her stage manager harassed and sexually assaulted her while travelling for the show. The stage manager, Frank Leidenheimer, was also a leading role in the comedy, which was common at the time.   In the time leading up to their stop in Chattanooga, the tension and harassment escalated, until reaching a climax before the opening curtain at the Opera House in Chattanooga.  Morrison left her dressing room and met the rest of the cast, who was in their places ready to begin the show. There were almost fifteen hundred people attending the play that night, just behind the curtain. Morrison drew a pistol from her dress and shot Frank Leidenheimer three times, killing him, while the band continued to play ragtime.   She was tried, exonerated, and went on to attempt to warn women about the dangers within the theatrical community. She was not heard by any and was instead rejected by the newspapers who had just months previous relished opportunities to discuss her “beauty” or “her courtroom stage gowns”. It would be funny if it wasn’t so incredibly sad.   This play deals with the “other side of stage life”, which is still tragically relevant. Julia, being an stage actress, tells this story through a memory play

starring Sam Massaro by David Sedaris Directed by Sean Harris   This outrageous holiday comedy stars Crumpet, who recounts his true-life tale of being an out-of-work writer doing a stint as a Macy’s department store elf. His encounters, as an Elf during the season of forced joy, are exactly the antidote for those in need of a escape from those holiday stresses and blues.  A delightfully absurd look at the commercial Christmas season, Sedaris’ sharp and hilarious observations have rapidly become one of the nation’s most popular holiday shows.     For more information, visit: www.playhouseonpark.org   For tickets, visit: https://playhouseonpark.tix.com/Schedule.aspx?OrgNum=2704   Tickets: $25   Showtimes:   Wednesday 12/4/19: 7:30 PM Thursday 12/5/19: 7:30 PM Friday 12/6/19: 8:00 PM Saturday 12/7/19: 8:00 PM Tuesday 12/10/19: 7:30 PM Wednesday 12/11/19: 7:30 PM Thursday 12/12/19: 7:30 PM Friday 12/13/19: 8:00 PM Saturday 12/14/19: 8:00 PM Tuesday 12/17/19: 7:30 PM Wednesday 12/18/19:7:30 PM Thursday 12/19/19: 7:30 PM Friday 12/20/19: 8:00 PM Saturday 12/21/19:8:00 PM

February 19th - March 8th, 2020 by Kate Hamill, based on the novel by Jane Austin Directed by Jason O’Connell   This isn’t your grandmother’s Austen!  Bold, surprising, boisterous, and timely, this Pride and Prejudice for a new era explores the absurdities and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life.  The outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined to never marry, despite mounting pressure from society. But can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing, and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn?  Literature’s greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical, or so full of life than it does in this effervescent adaptation.
