More about ‘The Last Painting of Sara de Vos’, by Dominic Smith:

This book weaves a story of three different time periods: a hard scrabble artist's life and work in 17th century Holland, a millionaire's world of mergers and glitz in 1950's New York, and a reclusive art historian and consultant in Australia in the 21st century. The narrative is most persuasive when portraying the life of the fictional Sara de Vos, where the author combined research about several women artists and their era. Moreover, the various cultural eras and their details affect his modern characters' interior lives and their sense of self much less than the painting by de Vos. The practices of art conservators and forgers are weaker threads in the book. The author however, successfully conjures the Netherland's period of commercial empire, a brilliant era of artistic, botanical and scientific achievements, and the admirable trait of persistence.
