The Improbability of Love, by Hannah Rothschild
What do you do when you have great wealth, great knowledge of art, an accomplished international career in film and media and a fine sense of humor? You write a brilliant first novel, if you are Hannah Rothschild (yes, one of the Rothschilds.) Somehow, in this complex story, you'll meet a grand collision of characters from the worlds of art, money, food, politics and the humdrum; auctioneers, researchers, oligarchs, influencers, and partiers will jostle for your attention. All are overshadowed by Annie, a driven young chef who happens upon an old painting in a junk shop. But, beyond all the other characters, the painting itself carries the day, for it has a superior consciousness and periodically narrates a chapter of its history. Little escapes the amusing wit and wise sensitivity of this painting - its voice summons up its painter, Antoine Watteau, and royalty, popes, lovers, thieves, Nazis and murderers, and even a talented young chef.
