Make Music Hartford
Get out and play!
Make Music Hartford is a part of the international Make Music Day movement which brings free, community-wide, outdoor musical celebrations to hundreds of cities worldwide! Every year, the celebration is held on June 21, the summer solstice, in more than 1,000 communities around the world.
Make Music Hartford will feature musicians of all abilities and music from any genre. Sidewalks, parks, front porches, and public spaces throughout the city, as well as virtual spaces, will become stages for local musicians to perform and for all to enjoy. Everyone is invited to participate in this international day of music by performing, providing an outdoor space, appreciating, or volunteering. It’s all for the love of music!
Make Music Hartford is brought to you by the Greater Hartford Arts Council as part of our mission to be a catalyst for the arts.
About the Program
Hartford’s one-day extravaganza of all things music!
2022
Get out and play! We’re so excited to get back out there and have fun! Prepare yourselves for the return of some favorite spotlight events, participate in national activities, and stumble upon a pop-up show at an unexpected venue - all for the love of music.
2019
103 events throughout the region With the help of almost a dozen local musicians and community members making up a volunteer committee, we went BIG in 2019. Almost a dozen double basses played jazz music uniquely arranged for Make Music Day under the Stegosaurus. We drummed on buckets by the Hilton, dropped verses at the Library, and got funky at Free Center, with almost 100 musicians playing throughout the day at 47 venues. 190 free music lessons were given, and community members participated in 25 spotlight events spread over nine neighborhood music hubs.
2021
Got music? We wanna hear it! Make Music Day arrived just in time for the re-opening of Hartford and a low COVID-19 case count. Musicians and audiences of all abilities and ages were able to partake in an entirely in-person celebration, including an Afro-Cuban masterclass + workshop, Sousapalooza, and guitar lessons!
2018
Where it all began With help from the Connecticut Office of the Arts, Hartford joined other select towns and cities across the state to bring Make Music Day to our state. From the first kazoo parade down Pratt St. to bands performing by the river and under the highway, our first MMH was a smash hit. We started with an 8am jazz session at the Bushnell Park Sculpture Garden and played all the way through 9pm with DJ Connie Carmona in Parkville, Liviu Pop’s Jazz Invitational at Black Eyed Sally’s, and more. Almost 70 bands and musicians participated in Year One!
2020
The pivot to a virtual MMH Like every other arts organization, we were sad to have to change our plans on a dime because of the incoming pandemic. However, we changed a crisis into an opportunity by supporting local artist livestreams with Make Music Mondays, and partaking in national virtual events like Bash the Trash instrument tutorials and 25x12 International Music Lessons! Out of 200 participants from around the world, 9 local artists participated in a #MySongIsYourSong global song swap, covering each other’s music. Dr. Dann Broyld, an associate professor of history at CCSU, was selected as the subject of CT’s submission for This American Song, a national initiative pairing songwriters with people of all ages with a story to tell.
