Please join fiber artist Saoirse Byrne, at Whitegate Farm, for an afternoon of learning how to twist together cordage from fabrics that are meaningful in our lives- perhaps you have a thread-bare t-shirt, a sister’s scarf, a grandfather’s handkerchief, or clothing from parents.
Cordage is essentially rope- two strands twisted individually in one direction and brought together in the opposite direction- dynamic and strong. Humans have been making cordage for over 50,000 years.
The process is fun, simple, and repetitive in a way that leaves room for conversation, laughter, contemplation. Cordage making is accessible to folks who would not consider themselves crafty as well as to artists engaging with materials in new ways.
Please bring a piece of fabric that is special to you- something that you have been holding onto but no longer use. Stained and well-worn items can become a beautiful necklace, hat band, or garland.
Saoirse Byrne has been teaching workshops from her studio in rural Northern California and has made thousands of yards of cordage from various materials. This is her first East Coast workshop since graduating from RISD back in 2001. Whitegate Farm is a beautiful 100 acre organic farm. Please join Saoirse for a delightful afternoon and come away with a length of cordage that you can wear or give as a gift.
